Creating a New Portfolio in Quantmatix

How to build a custom portfolio by adding instruments from scratch using the New Portfolio button.

Written by John Mulligan

Overview

The New Portfolio feature allows you to create a fully customised watchlist of financial instruments. Once created, your portfolio appears in the sidebar under Portfolio Summary and becomes available across the platform — including in the Screener filters, Portfolio Summary analytics, and AI Insights. You can manage as many portfolios as you like, each tailored to a specific strategy, theme, or client.

Step 1 — Click "New Portfolio"

The New Portfolio button is located in the top-right corner of every page in the app, next to the search bar. It features a folder icon and is always visible regardless of which page you are on.

Clicking the button navigates you to the Portfolio Management page (/portfolio/management/new) and immediately opens the Create Portfolio modal.

Step 2 — Name Your Portfolio

The Create Portfolio modal has a single field:

  • Portfolio Name — Type the name you want to give this portfolio (e.g. "Tech Stocks", "Client A", "High Conviction").

Once you have entered a name, click Save to create the portfolio. The portfolio is now listed in the sidebar under Portfolio Summary.

To cancel without creating, click Cancel or the (close) button — note that this will navigate you away from the page.

Step 3 — The Portfolio Management Page

After saving, you land on the Portfolio Management / Edit page for your new portfolio.

  1. The portfolio name is displayed with a pencil (✏️) icon beside it, which opens an Edit Portfolio Name modal so you can rename the portfolio at any time.

  2. Share Portfolio button — allows you to share the portfolio with others.

  3. Delete Portfolio button — permanently removes the portfolio. This button is only shown for portfolios you own (it does not appear for portfolios shared with you).

  4. A breadcrumb trail at the top shows: Portfolio Summary / [Portfolio Name] / Edit.

Section 1 — Instruments Added

The upper panel of the page shows all instruments currently in your portfolio. When a new portfolio is created, this section is empty and displays the message: "Your Portfolio is Empty — The selected portfolio does not contain any instruments. Use the 'Add to Portfolio' section below to add instruments to this portfolio."

Section 2 — Add to Portfolio

The lower panel contains the full instrument universe for you to browse and add instruments from. It has three tools in its toolbar:

Search by Ticker or Name Type any part of a company name or its ticker symbol to instantly filter the instrument list. For example, typing "Apple" will show Apple Inc. (AAPL:XNGS). This is the fastest way to find a specific stock.

Bulk Search Clicking Bulk Search opens a modal that accepts a list of identifiers entered one per line. Supported identifier formats are: Ticker, ISIN, CUSIP, SEDOL, or FIGI. Once you have entered your identifiers, click Find Instruments to locate and add them all at once. This is ideal when you have a pre-existing list of securities to import.

Tips for Getting Started

  • Name portfolios clearly — use descriptive names like "US Large Cap Growth" or "Client Name" to keep your portfolios easy to identify across the platform.

  • Use Bulk Search to import lists — if you have a spreadsheet of tickers, paste them line by line into the Bulk Search box to add many instruments at once instead of searching individually.

  • Use the Filter to explore themes — filter by Asset Class or Sector in the "Add to Portfolio" table to browse all available instruments in a specific category before deciding what to add.

  • Your portfolios appear in the Screener — once created, your portfolio becomes available as a filter option in the Screener's "My Portfolios" filter, allowing you to run screens against your custom holdings.

  • Instruments are saved automatically — every time you add or remove an instrument, the change is saved immediately. There is no separate "save" button to click.

  • Rename anytime — the pencil icon next to the portfolio name lets you rename it at any point without losing any of the instruments inside it.
